On the airburst of large meteoroids in the Earth’s atmosphere The Lugo bolide: reanalysis of a case study
نویسنده
چکیده
On January 19, 1993, a very bright bolide (peak magnitude −23) crossed the sky of Northern Italy, ending with an explosion approximately over the town of Lugo (Emilia Romagna, Italy). The explosion (14 kton of energy) generated shock waves which were recorded by six local seismic stations. A reanalysis of the available data leads us to the hypothesis that the meteoroid was a porous carbonaceous chondrite, somehow similar in constitution to the asteroid 253 Mathilde.

متن کاملBolides produced by impacts of large meteoroids into the Earth’s atmosphere: comparison of theory with observations II. Benešov bolide spectra
The unique observational spectrum of the very bright Benešov bolide EN 070591 is compared to theoretical bolide spectra. The −19.5 mag bolide was induced by a meteoroid of an estimated initial mass of 4000 kg, a density of 2 g cm−3 and a kinetic energy of1012 J (0.2 kT TNT). The ablating piston model predicts spectra of large bolides by radiative hydrodynamics calculations. We present examples ...
متن کاملFrictional and radiation heating of micron-sized meteoroids in the Earth’s upper atmosphere
This paper follows on from earlier work presented on the dynamics of micron-sized meteoroid particles, as they are decelerated in the Earth’s atmosphere at heights of 100 km or greater. Here the heating effects on these meteoroids are examined; both the intense heating during deceleration and the temperatures reached by particles settling through the atmosphere with low speeds ∼cm s−1 are consi...
متن کاملRecent Advances in Bolide Entry Modeling: a Bolide Potpourri*
In this paper, we will review recent research on numerous aspects of bolide entry into a planetary atmosphere, including such topics as the entry dynamics, energetics, ablation, deceleration, fragmentation, luminosity, mechanical wave generation processes, a total (panchromatic) power budget including differential and integral efficiencies versus time, etc. Fragmentation, triggered by stagnatio...
